What it is

Shan Foods was founded in 1981 by Sikandar Sultan in Karachi, Pakistan. It is known for packaged spice and recipe mixes for South Asian dishes.

This is Shan's classic biryani mix, the red box you find in half the Pakistani and North Indian kitchens in Ireland. One packet seasons a kilo of meat, so there is no measuring out a dozen whole spices. It gives a spicy, fragrant, long-grain basmati biryani, not a Tamil seeraga samba one. Choosing between? Tip: Soak the basmati 30 minutes and boil it only until 70 percent done. The dum finishes the rest.
