What it is

Laxminarayan has made its chiwda in Pune since 1945, in red packets since 1988, and the family business is now in its third generation. Besan laddu is the round sweet of North and West Indian homes, made by roasting gram flour until it smells nutty and binding it with sugar.

The ingredients list palmolein oil rather than ghee, with sugar and cardamom, and the laddu is sweet, crumbly and nutty. Choosing between laddus? Besan for a soft crumble; Suswaad Rava Laddu 200g (6 nos.) for the South Indian kind; Suswaad Pasi Paruppu Laddu 200gms for a moong dal laddu.

Tip: In a cold kitchen, leave the box open at room temperature for 10 minutes before serving. The laddu softens and the cardamom comes through.
