What it is
The Grand Sweets and Snacks was founded in 1982 in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, by G. Natarajan. The shop is famous for handing out its akkaravadisal sweet free to customers as prasadam.
Kara kuzhambu is the dark, tamarind-sour, chilli-hot kuzhambu of Tamil kitchens, and this jar is a thick, ready version to stir straight into hot rice or loosen with water into a gravy. Choosing between Grand Sweets jars? Kara kuzhambu for hot and sour; vathakuzhambu thokku for darker and more bitter-sour; puli kachal for tamarind rice.
Tip: Fry a handful of small onions in gingelly oil, then add two spoons of the paste and a cup of water. It tastes cooked from scratch.
Goes well with: Sri Durga Cold Pressed (Marachekku) Oil - Gingelly, SMS Maracheeni Appalam, Heera Sona Masoori Rice
