Sona Masoori rice, also called sona masoori arisi (Tamil) · sona masuri akki (Kannada) · sona masoori biyyam (Telugu) · sona masoori chawal (Hindi).

What it is

Sona Masoori is a cross of two older varieties, Sona and Masuri, grown across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. Kurnool is one of the districts it is best known for.

It is a light, medium grain that cooks soft, and it is the rice most Telugu and Kannada homes eat every day. Choosing a rice? Sona Masoori for soft everyday rice; Ponni boiled for firm, separate grains; Seeraga Samba for biryani.

Tip: Keep the sack off the floor in a sealed bin with a few dried red chillies or bay leaves on top, the way Amma did.
