What it is

Chitale Bandhu opened in Pune in 1950, when brothers Raghunath and Narsinha Chitale started Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale on the back of the dairy their father B.G. Chitale ran from 1939. Their bakarwadi followed in 1970.

The Special is the busy one: rice flakes with roasted peanuts, cashew, raisins and coconut chips, a sprinkle of sesame, red chilli and turmeric, and powdered sugar, so every handful is sweet, salty and hot at once. Choosing between Chitale chivdas? Special for the full festive mix; Lite for plain and savoury; spicy potato for crunch and heat.

Tip: Serve it in a wide, shallow bowl. The cashews and raisins sink to the bottom of a deep one.
