What it is

Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale was founded in Pune in 1950 by brothers Raghunath and Narsinha Chitale, and it grew out of a dairy business their father B.G. Chitale started in 1939. They began making bakarwadi in 1970, and the Pune box has been carried home in suitcases ever since.

Maida and gram flour pastry is rolled around coconut, sesame and spices, sliced and fried. Sweet, hot and sour all land in the same bite, thanks to sugar, green chilli and tamarind. Choosing between Maharashtrian snacks? Bakarwadi for sweet-spicy; chakli for plain crunch; chiwda for a light mixture.

Tip: If the spirals soften, two minutes in a warm oven brings the crunch back.
