Two kids fighting over who got to open the little kudai and set it over Pillaiyar.
- What: Paper umbrella (kudai) for the Vinayagar idol
- Size: Small, sized to stand over a home idol
- Made from: Coloured paper on thin ribs
- Best for: Vinayagar Chaturthi decoration
What it is
On Vinayagar Chaturthi the clay Pillaiyar comes home from the market with a small paper umbrella, a kudai, stuck in beside him. It is one of the smallest things in the decoration, and one of the first things children remember.
This one is coloured paper on thin ribs. It opens up and stands over or behind the idol, next to the erukkampoo garland and the kozhukattai plate. Because it is paper, it lasts for years if it is kept dry and flat. Choosing between Chaturthi items? A clay Ganesha idol for the centre; the Sri Durga Vinayagar Kit for the pooja items; kozhukattai flour for the modak.
Tip: Tape the handle to the back of the plank or the idol's base. It stays upright through the whole pooja.
Goes well with: Ganesha Idol Natural Clay 6 inch (Mukut), Sri Durga Vinayagar Pooja Kit, Anil Kozhukattai Flour
