What it is

Kamarkattu, also called kamarkat or kalkona, is the small coconut-jaggery sweet that sat in glass jars at every petty shop in Tamil Nadu. Fresh coconut is cooked down with jaggery until it is thick and sticky, then set into little pieces.

This one is made from fresh scraped coconut, jaggery and coconut oil. It is dark, chewy and toffee-like, with bits of coconut through it, and it clings to your teeth in the way everyone remembers. Choosing between old-style sweets? Kamarkattu for chewy and coconutty; peanut balls for crunch; sesame balls for a nuttier, harder bite.

Tip: If the pieces have stuck together, leave the pack in a warm spot for ten minutes and they will pull apart.
