What it is

Vedaone is made by Atrey Pharmaceuticals, an Ahmedabad, Gujarat-based maker of Ayurvedic, herbal and cosmetic products, which sells under the VEDAONE and MINTAAZ names.

Castor oil is the thick, pale, very slow oil that Tamil homes call vilakkennai, lamp oil, because it burns steadily in brass lamps. It was also the Friday or Saturday oil for hair: warmed, worked into the scalp and ends, and washed out with shikakai. It is much heavier than coconut oil, so a little goes a long way. Choosing between oils? Castor for lamps and a heavy oiling; coconut for everyday hair oil; neem oil for its sharp smell.

Tip: Warm the bottle in a mug of hot water for a few minutes. It pours and spreads much more easily.
