What it is

Vedaone is made by Atrey Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., an Ahmedabad-based manufacturer of Ayurvedic, herbal and cosmetic products. Neem oil comes from the neem tree, veppamaram in Tamil, the tree whose leaves went into rice tins, doorway garlands and the Ugadi pachadi.

The oil is dark, thick and very bitter, with a strong smell that is closer to garlic than anything floral. It is not for cooking or eating. At home it was mixed in small amounts into coconut oil for the hair, or shaken with water and soap as a spray for plants. Choosing between Vedaone oils? Neem for strong and bitter; castor for a thick hair oil blend; eucalyptus for a sharp scent.

Tip: It thickens and clouds in a cold Irish kitchen. Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes before using.
