Varalakshmi Amman Face Idol - Golden Lakshmi Mukham for Pooja

What it is

For Varalakshmi Vratham, on the Friday before the full moon in Shravan, many South Indian families dress a kalasam as the goddess. The pot is filled, topped with mango leaves and a coconut, and the Amman face is fixed on the front before the saree, flowers and jewellery go on.

This mukham has a golden face, hand-painted eyes, a red kumkum tilak, a multi-coloured kireedam and gold jhumka earrings. It is light, so it sits on the coconut without slipping. Choosing between additions? A small saree or blouse piece for dressing her; manjal and kumkum for the thread and tilak; betel leaves and pakku for the thamboolam.

Tip: Fix the face with thread tied round the coconut, not glue. It comes off cleanly after the pooja and lasts for years.
