Description
An uncle who dunked thattai in his coffee, and a family that never forgot.
- What: Thattai, flat crisp rice-flour rounds
- Pack: 200 g
- Brand: Suswaad
- Best for: Tea time, Deepavali and Krishna Jayanthi trays
What it is
Thattai are flat, crisp rounds of rice flour, made in almost every Tamil house at Deepavali and Krishna Jayanthi. Suswaad's has Bengal gram and urad dal mixed through, with curry leaves, red chilli and asafoetida, and it is fried until it snaps. Every family had its own thickness, and argued about it.
The dal gives it little crunchy bits, and it is savoury with only a light heat. Choosing between tea-time snacks? Thattai for flat and snappy; Suswaad Butter Murukku for richer and softer; Suswaad Seedai for small, hard little balls.
Tip: Crumble one over a bowl of curd rice just before eating. It is the crunch curd rice was missing.
Goes well with: Suswaad Butter Murukku, Suswaad Seedai, Narasu's Peaberry Coffee
