What it is
Uppu seedai are the salted rice-flour balls Tamil homes make for Krishna Jayanthi, rolled small and fried until hard and cracked. Nearly every family has a story about seedai jumping out of the hot oil, which is why they are often fried with the kadai half-covered.
They are crunchy right through and gently salted, and very hard to stop eating once the packet is open. Vella seedai is the sweet jaggery version; this is the savoury one that goes with coffee. Choosing between Suswaad snacks? Seedai for small, hard bites; thattai for flat and crisp; butter murukku for something softer and richer.
Tip: Take small handfuls and chew slowly. Seedai is meant to be hard, and that is the whole point.
Goes well with: Suswaad Adhirasam, Suswaad Butter Murukku, Cothas Coffee Speciality Blend
