Sona Masoori rice, also called sona masoori arisi (Tamil) · sona masuri akki (Kannada) · sona masoori biyyam (Telugu) · sona masoori chawal (Hindi).

What it is

Sona masoori is the medium-grain rice of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, and the everyday plate rice in most Telugu and Kannada homes. It is lighter than ponni and cooks soft and separate, with a faint fragrance.

This is Andhra sona masoori in a ten-kilo sack, enough for weeks of daily rice. It takes sambar, rasam, pappu and gongura without going heavy, and makes a good lemon or tamarind rice. Choosing between everyday rice? Sona masoori for light and fluffy; Thanjavur ponni for softer Tamil meals; idli rice only for batter.
