What it is

Native Food Store was started in Chennai in 2016 by P. Vishnukumar, an engineer by training, as a one-stop shop for millets and millet-based products. Its neem oil comes from the seeds of the neem tree, the tree that shaded front yards and temple walls across South India.

It is thick, dark and very bitter, with a strong garlicky smell, and it is not for cooking or eating. At home it was mixed in small amounts into coconut oil for the hair, or shaken with water and soap as a spray for plants. Choosing between Native Food Store oils? Neem for bitter and strong; castor for thick hair oil blends; eucalyptus for its sharp scent.

Tip: It sets solid in a cold Irish kitchen. Stand the bottle in warm water for a few minutes before using.
