What it is

Native Food Store was started in Chennai in 2016 by P. Vishnukumar, an engineer by training, as a one-stop shop for millets and millet-based products. Eucalyptus oil is the sharp, clean-smelling oil most Indian families know from the Nilgiris, sold in small bottles at every hill-station stall.

It is thin and clear with a smell that fills a room from a single drop. At home it went into a bowl of hot water, onto a handkerchief, or into the mop bucket. It is always used a few drops at a time, diluted before it touches skin. Choosing between oils? Eucalyptus for a sharp, fresh smell; Vedaone clove oil for a warm, spicy one; castor oil as a thick carrier.

Tip: Two drops on a cotton pad tucked into the wardrobe, and the whole shelf smells of the Nilgiris.
