What it is

Native Food Store was started in Chennai in 2016 by P. Vishnukumar, an engineer by training, as a one-stop shop for millets and millet-based products.

Nattu sakkarai, or country sugar, is cane jaggery in loose powder form. It has the deep caramel taste of a block of jaggery but spoons straight into coffee, payasam or ragi kanji without any grating, pounding or melting first. Choosing between jaggery? Nattu sakkarai powder for daily coffee and quick sweets; Sri Durga jaggery balls for pongal and adhirasam syrup; Palm Era's palm jaggery for karupatti coffee.

Tip: Add it to payasam after taking the pan off the heat. Boiled with milk, jaggery can make it split.
