What it is
Native Food Store was started in Chennai in 2016 by P. Vishnukumar, an engineer by training, as a one-stop shop for millets and millet-based products.
Elantha vadai is made from ilanthai, the small Indian jujube, pounded with chilli and salt and pressed into little flat cakes. It is the snack sold in paper twists outside Tamil schools and at village fairs: sour, salty, a bit sweet and chewy, with a slow chilli warmth that builds as you go. Choosing between old-school treats? Elantha vadai for sour and tangy; kamarkat for sweet and sticky; peanut balls for crunch.
Tip: Break off a small piece at a time. It is strong, and one cake lasts longer than you expect.
Goes well with: Velankudi Kamarkat, Durga Sweets & Snacks Peanut Ball, Suswaad Nel Pori Urundai
