What it is

TrueSouth's Malabar decoction is a ready-to-use South Indian filter coffee blend of 75% coffee and 25% chicory, with no preservatives, added colours or sugars. TrueSouth says it has operated since 1905, with the Pereira family growing coffee on plantations in the Western Ghats.

Each sachet is one cup of decoction, already brewed, so all that is left is hot milk, sugar and the pull between two tumblers. It tastes like filter coffee because it is filter coffee, minus the filter. Choosing between coffees? Malabar sachets for rushed mornings; Narasu's filter powder for the full ritual; Bru instant for the quickest cup.

Tip: Heat the milk until it just starts to froth, then pour in the decoction. Never boil the decoction itself.
