What it is

GRB began in 1984 with G.R. Balasubramaniam delivering butter around Bengaluru on a bicycle, and grew into a ghee maker. Its gulab jamun mix is a small pack of flour and milk solids that turns into a bowl of syrupy jamun in an afternoon.

Mix, rest, roll small and smooth, fry slowly, and let them soak. The jamuns swell as they drink the syrup, so roll them smaller than you think. Choosing between gulab jamun? GRB mix to fry your own; MTR's 500 g mix for a bigger crowd; the A2B tin when there is no time at all.

Tip: Add a crushed cardamom pod and a few saffron threads to the syrup. That is what makes it smell like a function.
