What it is

The Grand Sweets and Snacks was started in 1982 in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, by first-generation entrepreneur G. Natarajan. It is famous for handing out its akkaravadisal free to customers as prasadam.

Kadambam means a mix, and this thokku is several vegetables cooked right down with chilli and spice until thick and spoonable. It is sour and hot in the same mouthful, so a little goes a long way. Choosing between Grand Sweets jars? Kadamba thokku for a bit of everything; brinjal thokku for rich and tangy; vathakuzhambu thokku for dark and sour.

Tip: Keep a spoonful aside for the lunch box. Spread thin inside a folded dosai, it does not leak.
