What it is

The Grand Sweets and Snacks was founded in 1982 in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai by G. Natarajan, and the shop is famous for handing out its akkaravadisal free to customers as prasadam. Puli kachal is the thick tamarind mix that turns plain rice into puliyodharai.

It is sour, spicy and dark, cooked down until it clings to every grain. The rice tastes better an hour later and better still the next morning, which is why it is the lunch for long train rides.
