Ganesha Idol Natural Clay 6 inch (Pagdi)

Pillaiyar in a turban this year, on a plank by the window, a paper umbrella overhead.

• What: Ganesha (Pillaiyar) idol with pagdi turban
• Size: About 6 inches
• Made from: Unfired natural clay, no plaster of Paris
• Best for: Vinayagar Chaturthi pooja at home

What it is

Vinayagar Chaturthi at home begins with bringing Pillaiyar in. This one is moulded from natural clay and wears the pagdi turban rather than the crown, with one hand raised in blessing. It is left unpainted apart from the red tilak and the white tusks.

Because the clay is unfired, it softens and breaks down in water, so visarjan can be done at home in a bucket or tub rather than a river. Choosing between idols? Pagdi for the turbaned Ganesha; mukut for the crowned one; the coloured idols if you want him painted.

Tip: Unpack him from the foam shell only on the day. Damp or knocks before then mark the clay.

Goes well with: Sri Durga Vinayagar Pooja Kit, Vinayagar Paper Umbrella, Anil Kozhukattai Flour
