What it is

Daawat is the basmati of LT Foods, a family business that Raghunath Arora founded in the Amritsar basmati-growing belt of Punjab.

This is Daawat's Original basmati in the small bag, for homes where basmati is the special-occasion pot and sona masoori or ponni does the daily work. The long, slender grains lengthen as they cook and stay separate once soaked, and a 2 kg bag keeps well in a tight tub between uses. Choosing between Daawat basmatis? Original for pulao and everyday biryani; Golden Sella for firm grains in a big biryani; Extra Long for the longest grain.

Tip: For a quick peas pulao, fry whole spices in ghee, add soaked rice and 1½ cups of water per cup, and cook covered for 12 minutes.
