Description
Description
Coconut water running down the arm, and the shell still shut after the third whack.
- What: Coconut breaker, a hand tool for cracking whole coconuts
- Size: One tool
- Made from: Metal (the listing advises drying it to prevent rust)
- Best for: Chutney, avial, kozhukattai filling and pooja coconuts
What it is
At home the coconut was cracked on the back step with the blunt side of an aruval, or against the edge of a stone, and half the water ended up on the floor. A coconut breaker does the same job in the kitchen: set it on the seam, strike firmly, and the shell splits in two.
Fresh coconut goes into more South Indian cooking than people realise: thengai chutney, avial, poriyal, the kozhukattai filling, and the coconut broken at the start of a pooja. Choosing your coconut? A fresh one broken here for chutney and pooja; Heera Desiccated Coconut Fine for burfi and baking; KTC Coconut Oil when only the flavour in the tempering is wanted.
Tip: Turn the coconut and tap all round the middle line first. The final strike then splits it into two even halves.
Goes well with: Black Stone Ammikal, Anil Kozhukattai Flour, KTC Coconut Oil
