What it is

Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale was founded in Pune in 1950 by brothers Raghunath and Narsinha Chitale, and grew out of a dairy business their father B.G. Chitale started in 1939. Shankarpali is one of the essentials of a Maharashtrian Diwali faral plate.

It is made from semolina, maida and sugar, rolled, cut into small diamonds and fried until crisp. The result is lightly sweet, somewhere between a biscuit and pastry, with a crunch that lasts. Choosing between Chitale snacks? Shankarpali for sweet, chakli for a spiced spiral, bakarwadi for sweet, sour and hot at once.

Tip: Keep them in a steel dabba with a folded paper towel. They stay crisp through an Irish autumn.
