What it is

Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale was founded in Pune in 1950 by brothers Raghunath and Narsinha Chitale, and grew out of a dairy business their father started in 1939. The famous bakarwadi came later, in 1970.

These are banana chips in a twisted cut, tossed in a chaat-style seasoning: a little sugar, red chilli, black salt, dry mango powder and mint, among other spices. The first taste is sweet, then comes the tang and the slow chilli. Choosing between Chitale banana chips? Regular salty for plain and simple; salt and pepper for a sharper bite; twisted masala when you want sweet, sour and hot at once.

Tip: Tip a handful over a bowl of plain chivda or bhel. The sweet-sour dust coats everything.
