What it is

V. P. Bedekar & Sons was founded in 1910 in Girgaon, Mumbai. The family added spices in 1917 and pickles in 1921, and Maharashtrian homes know the name for its pickles, masalas and papads. This is its Ganapati special besan ladoo.

Only four things go in: besan, sugar, ghee and cardamom. Besan ladoo is traditionally made by roasting the gram flour in ghee until it smells nutty, then binding it with sugar, so each one is dense, a little grainy and melts slowly. Choosing between ladoos? Besan for the classic nutty one; Suswaad rava laddu for a lighter, grainier bite; Charliee sesame laddu for crunch.

Tip: Set a few aside on a small plate for the naivedyam before the box is opened for guests.
