Description
A Telugu friend's lunch box in college, and the first taste of gongura.
- What: Gongura (sorrel leaf) rice paste
- Pack: 400 g jar
- Brand: A2B (Adyar Ananda Bhavan)
- Best for: Gongura rice, with dosa or curd rice
What it is
Gongura is the sour leaf of a hibiscus plant, loved across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where gongura pachadi sits on almost every table. This jar comes from Adyar Ananda Bhavan, founded by K.S. Thirupathi Raja, who started out making sweets in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu.
The paste is sour first, then hot, with the deep, slightly earthy taste the leaf gets when it is cooked down in oil. Choosing between rice pastes? Gongura for sourness you can taste from across the room, kara kuzhambu for heat, puliyodharai for tamarind rice to pack for a long trip.
Tip: Top gongura rice with a few slices of raw onion. That is how it is eaten in Andhra homes.
Goes well with: Ashvill Sona Masoori Rice, Idhayam Gingelly Oil, Udhaiyam Appalam
