What it is
Sona masoori is a medium-grain rice grown mainly across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka. It is the plain white rice that many South Indian homes cook every day, and the five-kilo bag suits a couple or a small household.
It cooks soft, light and separate, with a mild taste that lets the sambar, rasam or kootu do the talking. Leftovers turn easily into lemon rice or curd rice the next day. Choosing between rices? Sona masoori for light everyday plates; Ashvill Ponni Boiled Rice for a firmer parboiled grain; seeraga samba for biryani.
Tip: Soak the rinsed rice for 15 minutes before cooking. The grains cook more evenly and stay separate.
Goes well with: 777 Madras Sambar Powder, Udhaiyam Toor Dal, Udhaiyam Appalam
