What it is

777's roots go back to 1933, when Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan opened on Thambu Chetty Street in Madras. Thakkali thokku is tomatoes cooked down slowly with chilli and spice until the oil separates and the colour turns deep red.

It is tangy and mildly hot, thick enough to spread and loose enough to stir through rice. A spoonful with a little gingelly oil turns plain rice into lunch. Choosing between 777 tomato jars?
