What it is
777 has roots going back to 1933, when brothers R.S. Narayanasamy Iyer and R.S. Ganapathy Iyer opened Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan on Thambu Chetty Street in Madras. Inji thokku is traditionally ginger cooked down slowly with tamarind, jaggery and chilli until it is thick and spoonable.
It is sharp, hot and slightly sweet, with a jammy texture that clings to rice. A teaspoon is enough to wake up a whole plate of curd rice. Choosing between 777 ginger jars? The thokku for a smooth spread; Ginger Pickle for cut pieces in oil; Mango Ginger Pickle for something milder and more fragrant.
Tip: Spread a thin layer inside a dosai before folding it for the lunch box. It stays put and does not leak.
Goes well with: Sri Annam Thanjavur Ponni Raw Rice, Idhayam Gingelly (Sesame) Oil, 777 Ginger Pickle
