What it is
The 777 name comes from the licence number the business was given under India's Fruit Products Order, and the family's Madras hotel on Thambu Chetty Street dates back to 1933. Gingelly oil is nallennai, the sesame oil Tamil kitchens use where the oil is meant to be tasted.
This one is cold pressed, so it smells and tastes clearly of sesame. The 500 ml bottle is a fair size to try before buying a litre. Choosing between oils? Gingelly for kuzhambu, podi and pickles; groundnut for everyday cooking and frying; coconut for Kerala dishes.
Tip: Mix it into idli podi until the podi looks like wet sand. That is the right amount.
Goes well with: 777 Rice Powder - Dhall, Suswaad Idli Chilli Powder (Sesame), 777 Vathal Kuzhambu Rice Paste
