What it is
777 goes back to Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan on Thambu Chetty Street in Madras, opened in 1933 by brothers R.S. Narayanasamy Iyer and R.S. Ganapathy Iyer. Nellikai urugai is Indian gooseberry, cut and pickled in oil with chilli and spices, the way it is made in Tamil homes when amla is in season.
It is sour first, then a little bitter, then hot, and a small spoon goes a long way. Choosing between pickles? 777 amla for sharp and sour; 777 cut mango for the everyday classic; 777 lime for a softer tang beside curd rice.
Tip: Start with half a teaspoon at the edge of the plate. Amla pickle is sharper than it looks.
Goes well with: Sri Annam Thanjavur Ponni Raw Rice, Udhaiyam Appalam, 777 Lime Pickle
