What it is

Vedaone is made by Atrey Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., an Ahmedabad, Gujarat maker of Ayurvedic, herbal and cosmetic products, sold under the VEDAONE and MINTAAZ names. Mahanarayan is one of the old formulas: a sesame oil base infused with herbs, used across India as a massage oil and usually warmed a little first.

It pours thick and smells of the herbs rather than of sesame, and it stays on the skin until it is washed off, so it is a before-the-bath oil. Choosing between the oils? Mahanarayan for a warm massage, coconut oil for everyday use, castor oil when you want something heavier.

Tip: Stand the bottle in a mug of hot water for five minutes before you start. Warm oil spreads, cold oil drags.
