What it is

Town Bus is the snack range from GRB, the ghee maker that G.R. Balasubramaniam started in 1984 by delivering butter around Bengaluru on his bicycle.

These are banana slices fried in palmolein oil with salt and turmeric, which gives them their yellow colour. Crisp, salty and a little starchy-sweet, they go with a cup of tea as easily as with rice and rasam, and they rarely last past the first evening. Choosing between banana chips? Town Bus for plain salted; Chitale Bandhu salt and pepper for a peppery bite; Chitale Bandhu masala for chilli heat.

Tip: Crush a handful over curd rice or a bowl of rasam rice. The salt and crunch do the rest.
