What it is

Iluppai is the mahua tree, and iluppai ennai is the oil from its seeds. Older Tamil households kept a bottle for the lamp and for the weekly oil bath, and it is one of the oils that goes into blended lamp oil.

It is thick and pale, and it sets solid in the cold, so in an Irish house expect to warm the bottle first. This bottle is for external use and lamps only, not for cooking. Tip: Stand the bottle in a mug of hot water for five minutes. It turns from a paste back to a pourable oil.
