What it is

Jamun is naval pazham in Tamil, the small purple-black fruit that stains fingers and tongues every summer. For this powder the seeds are dried and ground fine, and it is the kind of thing kept in a small jar in many Indian kitchens and used by the half spoon.

It is dark brown, dry and strongly astringent, with a bitter edge, nothing like the sweet fruit.
