What it is

GRB began in 1984 with G.R. Balasubramaniam delivering butter around Bengaluru on a bicycle. Ghee made the name, and the family has since added sweets, snacks and the Town Bus range.

Date halwa is dark, dense and chewy, with the deep, caramel sweetness of dates. It is richer and less bouncy than Bombay halwa and softer than a Tirunelveli halwa. It firms in the cold and loosens in a warm room. Choosing between GRB halwas? Date for dark and rich; Bombay for bright, jelly-like and chewy; dry fruit for more bite.

Tip: Cut small squares with a knife dipped in hot water. It slices cleanly and does not stick.
