What it is
The Grand Sweets and Snacks was started in 1982 in Gandhi Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, by first-generation entrepreneur G. Natarajan. The shop is famous for handing out its akkaravadisal free to customers as prasadam.
This is vathal kuzhambu cooked down into a thick thokku, so it spoons straight through hot rice with no cooking. It is tamarind-dark, salty and hot. Thin it with a little water and it becomes a gravy. Choosing between Grand Sweets jars? Vathakuzhambu thokku for sour and dark; puli kachal for tamarind rice; kara kozhambu for a spicier gravy.
Tip: Fry a few sundakkai vathal in gingelly oil and stir them in. It tastes like it was made that morning.
Goes well with: Sri Durga Sundaikai Vathal, SMS Maracheeni Appalam, Native Food Store Marachekku Gingelly Oil
