What it is
Gopuram was started in Chennai in 1945 by Sri Y. V. Seshachalam, and is best known for its kumkum, alongside turmeric, vibuthi, sandal and sambrani. Namakatti is the white clay stick used to draw the thiruman, the Vaishnava namam, on the forehead.
The stick is rubbed on a wet stone or saucer until it gives a white paste, then drawn up the forehead with a finger in the two lines. The red or yellow centre line is drawn separately. Choosing between marks? Namakatti for the white namam; kumkum for the red dot; chandan powder for a sandal paste mark.
Tip: Keep one small, flat stone just for the namakatti. It rubs up faster and more evenly on the same stone each day.
Goes well with: Gopuram Kumkum Small Tin, Chandan Powder, Deepam Vilaku Thiri (Wicks)
