What it is

Bru was launched in 1968 and, according to Hindustan Unilever, was India's first coffee-chicory instant coffee. It sources its coffee from South Indian plantations. The big 200 g jar is the one that lives next to the kettle for the whole month.

Because it is blended with chicory, the cup is darker and rounder than plain instant, and it takes milk and sugar well. It is also the coffee to whisk into frothy beaten coffee. Choosing between coffees? Bru instant for a quick cup; Bru Green Label for real steel-filter decoction; Bru Gold for a smoother, freeze-dried jar.

Tip: For beaten coffee, whisk 1 teaspoon Bru, 1 teaspoon sugar and 1 teaspoon hot water until pale, then add hot milk.
