What it is

Bru was launched in 1968 and sources its coffee from South Indian plantations. Green Label is its filter coffee: roasted coffee blended with chicory and ground for a traditional steel filter. It is the everyday pouch in a lot of South Indian kitchens, the one bought without thinking.

It makes a strong, dark decoction with the slight bitterness chicory brings, the kind that still tastes of coffee after three parts milk and a spoon of sugar. Choosing between filter coffees? Bru Green Label for a strong everyday cup; Cothas 85:15 for more coffee and less chicory; Kumbakonam Degree for a thick, old-style decoction.

Tip: Once opened, keep the powder in an airtight jar. Ground coffee goes flat within weeks in an open pouch.
