What it is

Athavale's is a Pune family food business that has been going since 1970, started by Sushila and Purushottam Athavale and trading as a unit of Sushila Gruh Udyog. It makes the Maharashtrian things a household would otherwise spend a week making itself: chivda, chakli, ladoos and polis.

Ragi in the dough makes these darker and nuttier than a rice chakli, and the straight stick shape packs flat and breaks less than the coil. Rice flour, Bengal gram flour, sesame, cumin and asafoetida are in there too. Choosing between the chaklis? Ragi sticks for dark and nutty, Chitale chakli for the classic coil, thenkuzhal for pale and plain.
