What it is
777 started with brothers R.S. Narayanasamy Iyer and R.S. Ganapathy Iyer, whose Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan opened on Thambu Chetty Street in Madras in 1933. The name 777 comes from the licence number the business was given under India's Fruit Products Order.
This is tamarind already soaked, squeezed and strained, so it goes straight from the jar into the pot, with no fibre and seeds left in the sink. Thick, dark and properly sour. Choosing between tamarinds? The paste for weeknight sambar and rasam; Aachi tamarind block when you like to extract your own; 777 puliyodharai paste when you want tamarind rice already seasoned.
Tip: Start with one teaspoon per pot of rasam, taste once it boils, then add more. Jars vary in strength.
Goes well with: 777 Madras Sambar Powder, 777 Madras Rasam Powder, LG Asafoetida (Hing) Cake
