What it is

777 goes back to Hotel Sri Rama Bhavan, opened on Thambu Chetty Street in Madras in 1933 by brothers R.S. Narayanasamy Iyer and R.S. Ganapathy Iyer. Paruppu podi is a dry powder of roasted dal and spices, mixed into hot rice with ghee or gingelly oil.

In a traditional meal it is the very first course, before the sambar arrives, and it is what children are often given first.
