What it is

Vedaone is made by Atrey Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd., an Ahmedabad, Gujarat-based maker of Ayurvedic, herbal and cosmetic products. This bottle is juice from jamun, the Indian blackberry, called naaval pazham in Tamil and neredu in Telugu, the dark purple fruit of the early monsoon.

It is deep purple and astringent, the dry, mouth-puckering taste you remember from the fruit, without the sweetness. It is taken in small measures and diluted, not poured by the glass like a fruit juice. Choosing between Vedaone juices? Jamun on its own for the plain fruit taste; karela jamun for bitter as well as astringent; triphala for the three-fruit blend.

Tip: Pour it over ice with the water and a pinch of black salt. It tastes much closer to the fruit that way.
