What it is
Ponni is the rice of the Kaveri delta around Thanjavur, and in most Tamil homes it simply means rice. Boiled, or puzhungal, ponni is parboiled before milling, so it cooks soft but holds its shape.
It is faintly sweet and soft without going mushy, the rice for sambar sadam, kuzhambu and a bowl of curd rice at the end. The one-kilo bag is a good way to try it before committing to a big sack. Choosing between rice? Ponni boiled for everyday Tamil meals; ponni raw for pongal and payasam; sona masoori for lighter, fluffier plates.
Tip: For curd rice, cook it with an extra half cup of water and mash lightly while warm.
Goes well with: Annapoorna Sambar Powder, 777 Lime Pickle, 777 Appalam
