What it is

Prestige is the flagship brand of TTK Prestige, part of the TTK Group founded in 1928 by T.T. Krishnamachari. The company began making pressure cookers in India in 1959, and for many families the name simply means the cooker.

The Popular Plus is the plain, outer-lid kind, with the whistle that tells the whole flat lunch is on its way. Three litres is the size for one or two people: a cup of toor dal, a pot of rice or a small pongal. Choosing between cookers? Three litres for a couple or a student flat; the Prestige 8 litre stainless steel for a family pot of sambar or biryani; an idli cooker for Sunday breakfast.

Tip: Put a small steel plate or a few drops of oil in with the dal. It keeps the foam down and the whistle clean.
