What it is

Karuppu ellu is sesame with its dark coat left on. Tamil homes keep it for particular dishes, ellu sadam, ellu podi and black sesame urundai with jaggery, and many families use it for the offerings made on amavasai and at tharpanam.

It is bolder and slightly more bitter than white sesame, and turns deep and nutty once toasted. A little goes a long way in a podi. Choosing between sesames?
